It is the process of removing small plugs of thatch and soil approximately 2-3 inches deep and 5/8" in diameter from you lawn. Aeration should be done once a year and preferably in the fall. Aeration helps in the following ways and in producing a more vigorous lawn.  Improves air exchange in the soil Allows moisture to reach the roots Allows fertilizer to reach the roots Improves root growth Helps reduce compaction Reduces thatch Reduce stress Thatch Lawn thatch is the layer of dead turfgrass tissue between the green vegetation and the soil surface that must be removed (a process known as "dethatching") to maintain lawn health.
